William Floyd Community Summit
Quality of Life & Code Enforcement Committee
News
On April 18th the committee met with Dominick Ninivaggi, Superintendent, Suffolk County Department of Public Works Vector Control.
Superintendent Ninivaggi gave an informative presentation on the work being done, the plans for the future and the difficulties encountered in controlling mosquitos.
It was a lively meeting and there were some surprises. Most of the committee was surprised to learn that the Fire Island National Seashore wilderness area, which is a breeding ground for mosquitos can not be treated - because it is a federal area. Another, similar surprise came when the committee learned that the William Floyd Estate, another federal preserve, can not be treated. Both of these areas contribute a tremendous amount to our mosquitos problem. Superintendent Ninivaggi says his agency is working closely with the federal agencies regarding this problem.
Responding to the question: What can we do at home? Superintendent Ninivaggi suggested using a home treatment for the grass - available in hardware and garden stores.
